Religious Artifact Analysis Essay

The artifact that we intend to examine is the hit song â€Å"King Without a Crown† by the reggae music artist, Matisyahu. This music artist interests us because he is a popular performer who we have listened to voluntarily, with the particular song â€Å"King Without a Crown† ranking in the top 40 songs in America at one point in his career. Additionally, choosing a Matisyahu song is of interest to us as students at the University of Maryland because of Matisyahu’s live performance at UMD last year. Music is a particular form of rhetoric for artists to communicate ideas and inspire their listeners to adopt or understand belief systems. In the case of Matisyahu, the artist sings about his relationship to God and his religion, Judaism while making various references to religious and cultural aspects of his religion. As an Orthodox Jew, Matisyahu provides his audience with music specifically tied to religious belief. However, Matisyahu’s music may be universally enjoyed by people of any religion, as demonstrated by his various appearances on MTV during the time that his single, â€Å"King Without a Crown†, was popularly played on the radio and bought on iTunes. Matisyahu is known for being a Jewish figure in the music industry who is able to incorporate his religious passion to musical talent in a quite unique manner, through the production of reggae songs. Although music is a central part of the Jewish religion, especially in the practice of Orthodox Judaism, reggae music sung in English is an unconventional means of musical expression compared to other types of Jewish music, which include klezmer or traditional singing of psalms in Hebrew. At first glance, we noticed the symbols that Matisyahu uses in his song to represent different experiences in life. For example, Matisyahu incorporates a juxtaposition of darkness and light to demonstrate emotions and situations that are both positive (light) and negative (dark). Additionally, the artist uses much religious jargon, referring to God by the different names that Jewish people use to address a higher being. There is also an element of religion and/or God as a type of source that may protect and help people if they reach out and ask for such assistance, which is a fundamental Jewish belief. Matisyahu alludes to ideas of prayer, belief, and the Messiah, bringing important Jewish concepts to his song in an inspirational way of expressing his love for God. In studying this artifact, we will look at the lyrics of the song, â€Å"King Without a Crown† primarily to analyze the language that Matisyahu uses to communicate his  ideas. Additionally, we will draw upon the images used in this particular song’s music video to complement the lyrics that we study. In order to have a complete understanding of our text, we will research the biography of Matisyahu, including a focus on recent events, such as the scandal that occurred within the religious Jewish community when he shaved off his beard in the fall. Finally, to understand all of the Jewish references that Matisyahu makes in his song, we will research specific Jewish concepts, beliefs, and approaches to religious topics, such as the waiting for the Messiah to come from a Jewish lens. Studying a Matisyahu song is worthwhile because this particular artist is one of the most visible and popular Jewish representatives and role models in the secular world of music production. It is important to note that Jewish people do not exclusively enjoy Matisyahu music. Rather, his songs have been popular throughout America, especially among reggae fans. Especially as Jews are a minority religion in nearly all countries in the world, Matisyahu is a positive representation of Judaism and the Jewish people to the world, working to deconstruct religious stereotypes and serve as an example for devout people of all religions to embrace both their passions and their religious beliefs. Descriptive Analysis Purpose- It’s about the power of trusting G-d in everyday life. also from a Jewish standpoint, it refers to the wait for a Messiah that will come; communicating his dedication to g-d. He is trying to convince his audience to follow that lifestyle Audience- His fans; mostly Jewish listeners now that he is not as famous anymore Controversial- Religious, some people do not share the same beliefs, minority religion, he is Orthodox and was affiliated with Chabbad at the time. He speaks about G-d and there are people who do not believe in G-d. Rhetor’s (Matisyahu) Purpose: â€Å"King Without a Crown† Following listening to Matisyahu’s â€Å"King Without a Crown† and reading its lyrics it seems as though he is referring to someone, use as a model representative of people in general that his targeted audience can relate to, who is lost spiritually and more specifically neglecting/ignoring the Torah. His identity with Chasidism is evident from even first glance at his  everyday attire consisting of a dark hat, matching long dark suit and coupled with the Chasidism orthodox braided hair hanging down from either temple and long beard. When analyzing Matisyahu’s lyrics and his passionate performance of â€Å"King Without a Crown,† it is feasible to argue his ultimate purpose from a rhetorical standpoint is to advocate a more Chasidic expression of faith and encouraging more attention and adherence toward prayer and the Torah. By calling his targeted audience (his fans) to reflect upon their daily lifestyle in contrast with the teachings of the Torah, he brings our attention toward our personal daily conduct and instills his audience members with feelings of personal accountability for each of our actions and the lives we choose to live. Ultimately the song, â€Å"King Without a Crown† is aimed at the nature of altering people’s perception of living a faith-bound righteous life in the eyes of G_d and calls for change in social action, more specifically, our everyday lifestyles and behaviors so that it emulates the Torah’s teachings. s exemplified by his lyrics such as: You’re all that I have and you’re all that I need Each and every day I pray to get to know your peace Wanna be close to you, yes I’m so hungry You’re like water for my soul when it gets thirsty If you’re drowning in the waters and you can’t stay afloat Ask Hasheem for mercy {and} he’ll throw you a rope Encouragement to trust and turn to G_d, not only when we desire something or are in need, but ydaily and it should be reflected by our actions. asking for G_d to help you do so. Apparently Matisyahu was a heavy drug user earlier in his life, and the video and song are obviously an autobiographical depiction of someone who overcame their demons. I have heard a lot of Christians say they like his music. I agree that his music is good†¦ but if someone is looking to Matisyahu as a prophet proclaiming God’s Word, I’m afraid he is very far from it. The title of the song is â€Å"King Without a Crown.† Such a title may sound familiar to Christians. Jesus is often described in such a way. However, this is not at all what Matisyahu is referring to in his song. He continues: If you’re drowning in the waters and you can’t stay afloat Ask Hasheem for mercy {and} he’ll throw you a rope (You’re) lookin’ for help from God; you say he couldn’t be found Searching up to the sky and looking beneath the ground Like a King without his Crown You keep fallin’ down You really want to live but can’t get rid of your frown You(‘re) try(in’) to reach unto the heights and wound bound down on the ground Matisyahu’s King without his Crown is not Christ, it is himself. The chorus of the song reveals more: What’s this feeling? My love will rip a hole in the ceiling (I give/Givin’} myself to you {now} from the essence of my being and I sing to my God, songs of love and healing †¦..I want Moshiach now so it’s time we start revealing Here he depicts the afflicting emotional torment of a spiritually lost and broken soul , and finally comes to recognition that he is powerless without G_d. He’s at the lowest breaking point in his life and surrenders his will to seeking out Moshiach for hope of healing. Matisyahu uses this experience to exemplify the saving strength and power of loving G_d, reinforcing once again, the significance of faith in our lives. Slavery is also a major theme of Matisyahu’s music, and is emphasized in the live version of â€Å"King Without a Crown.† Matisyahu sings of the slavery in which human beings sometimes bring upon themselves through materialism and hubris: â€Å"You’re a slave to yourself and you don’t even know/You want to live the fast life but your brain moves slow/If you’re trying to stay high then you’re bound to stay low/You want G-d but you can’t deflate your ego/If you’re already there then there’s nowhere to go/If you’re cup’s already full then it’s bound to overflow.† â€Å"King Without a Crown† is †¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Its widespread popularity is illustrated by the fact â€Å"song has been the band’s biggest commercial success, breaking into the Modern Rock Top 10 and peaking at #7 (citation needed).† When critically analyzing the rhetor’s (Matisyahu’s) purpose and underling significance of his song â€Å"King Without a Crown,† from a theoretical/conceptual perspective; 3 primary inferences can be made. 1.) Observe/abide by the Torah 2.) G_d is all you need 3.) Only lust for salvation; avoid materialism Conclusion Statement: Consider the rhetor’s purpose: 1.) What is the nature – call to action, altering perception, maintain social action? 2.) What was the cost the audience was faced with in terms of the rhetor’s appeals? Reevaluate their faith and lifestyles from a critical standpoint and evaluate the impact faith has to the contribution of our beliefs and actions and recognize what changes must be made for us to fulfill a life in accordance with the teachings of the Torah and walk a path that will lead to heaven and fill the with void/ provide direction in our livees felt by each of us exemplified by â€Å"a King Without a Crown† or in other words without a spiritual beacon to guide/ inspire leadership. The cost at critically in-depth analysis of our life is the resulting uneasines/weariness/ relucantce/ dislike/ unfavorable/ flaws/causes uncomfotableness associated with identifying and accepting our flaws.

Throughout this paper, I discuss the life of Jesus Christ and the life of Paul the Apostle and their extraordinary missions they accomplished that led to faith in Christianity. The Life of Jesus Christ Jesus Christ had a remarkable life with a mission to spread the good word of God. A few of Jesus’ apostles wrote historical gospels of Jesus’ life; some of this information includes His beginning, His teaching, His sacrifice, and His resurrection. In the Beginning The Bible contains scripture and prophecy of Jesus before and after His birth. In the beginning, some of historical topics included His genealogy, His learning, His baptism, His test, and His declaration as the Messiah. Jesus birth Virgin Mary conceived the Son of God by the Holy Spirit while engaged to Joseph the son of David. Next, according to the Oriental Institute of the University of Chicago, writing emerged in many different cultures throughout the ancient world, it wasn’t the creation of one people; however, the Sumerians are credited with inventing the earliest form of writing around 3,500 B. C. E. The Sumerians writings on stone tablets started off as just simple pictures and pictograms that represented objects or ideas (see Figure 1). Soon after the Sumerians simplified the pictograms into wedge-shaped signs which is called cuneiform writing (â€Å"Ancient Mesopotamia: The Invention of Writing†). The invention of writing was the dawn of the information revolution. This great technological advance allowed news and ideas to be carried to distant places without having to rely on a messenger’s memory. Like all inventions, writing emerged because there was a need for it. In Mesopotamia, it was developed as a record-keeping vehicle for commercial transactions or administrative proc edures. There are also texts that served as â€Å"copy books† for the education of future scribes. As writing spread, people developed their own styles, forms, and way of writing. Another invention that we still use today is government. I learned from studying world history that the Sumerians needed a way to maintain order, organize work forces, and keep crimes from happening because Mesopotamia was a very large city with many artifacts and valuables. The â€Å"Bayanihan sa Calauan† is a 107-hectare resettlement site project that supports the â€Å"Kapit Bisig Para Sa Ilog Pasig Movement† of ABS-CBN Foundation and the Department of Environment Natural Resources. Other partners in the project are Habitat for Humanity, National Housing Authority, Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System, Pasig River Rehabilitation Commission, and Couples of Christ Foundation for Family and Life. In 2010, The Courtyard, GA’s first commercial project and Sameera, another GA housing project were launched in Angeles City, Pampanga. Further, Globe Asiatique has partnered with ABS-CBN, sponsoring and donating house lot packages to the winners of Pinoy Big Brother, Pinoy Dream Academy, Little Big Star, and Wowowee’s â€Å"Pera o Bayong†. GA has also renovated the ABS-CBN Foundation building estimated to be worth P50 million. The new building was launched in February 1, 2010. But not until May 2010, Pag-ibig discovered multiple deficiencies in the documentation of GA’s Xevera housing loans which started last 2007. The deficiencies include over 9,951 accounts from borrowers who denied getting any loan from Pag-ibig and another 1000 borrowers who could not be located. Results of the internal investigation also showed that the anomaly granted Globe Asiatique to avail itself of a funding commitment line of P6. 5 billion, which is 10 times higher than the amount other developers are allowed to participate through the Pag-IBIG housing loans. Back in June 20, 2008, Globe Asiatique entered into an agreement with Pag-ibig in response to the need to provide housing for self-employed workers, house-helpers, and OFWs. This also piloted the special memberships program through the Xevera project. Under the agreement, GA acco rdingly, was able to take-out loans amounting to a total of P7, 007, 806, 00 to fund its housing projects Xevera Bacolor, Xevera Mabalacat, and Sameera in Angeles City. The Commission on Audit (COA) investigations revealed that nearly 300 people who borrowed from Pag-IBIG were bogus. Pag-IBIG also found out that about 1,400 are fake pag-IBIG members in Xevera, Bacolor and Mabalacat. As investigations deepened, similar controversies surfaced concerning GA’s Saint Monique Valaiz in Rizal and Chateau Condominium in Valenzuela. On Sept. 6, 2010, the Ombudsman formed the six-member â€Å"Task Force Pag-IBIG† to investigate the irregularities and to determine whether laws or regulations were violated, and to file criminal and administrative charges if necessary. On the same day, Globe Asiatique withdrew its P3. 4-billion initial public offering (IPO) following the resignation of its underwriter, BDO Capital and Investment Corp. , after reports of its allegedly questionable loan transactions surfaced. Delfin Lee, president of Globe Asiatique, denied all the allegations surrounding the controversy. Pag-IBIG blacklisted Globe Asiatique and its officials in October 14, 2010. A few days after, in October 27, 2010, it also blacklisted its sister company, Filmal Realty Corporation. Moreover, Pag-IBIG and the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) filed 3 charges of syndicated estafa against Delfin Lee and GA’s other officers for allegedly using Pag-IBIG funds for questionable housing loans and bogus housing projects in October 29, 2010, December 10, 2010, and February 18, 2011. Also charged were a former CEO of Pag-IBIG Fund and a lawyer of Pag-IBIG’s Legal Department, who notarized the majority of the fake and/or fraudulent loans submitted by GA to the Agency. Before the incident happened, When Globe Asiatique’s credit lines with local banks ere used up, the plan to proceed with the Initial Public Offering (IPO) at the local bourse became more compelling. The IPO, scheduled for late 2010, was supposed to bring in about P3. 3 billion. But when the Pag-IBIG commotion happened, the IPO plan was shelved. Globe Asiatique cited weak global market conditions but there were also news reports that it was because BDO Capital, the underwriter quit. B ecause of the controversy that GA is now facing, its founder Mr Delfin Lee is now at risk. Before the incident, he was considered by many as a dreamer, a visionary, and an idealist. In fact, Mr. Delfin Lee once were called by the Mabalacat, Pampanga Mayor Marino Morales as someone who had the full measure of miracles requisite to a canonization, but it didn’t lasts for long, Mr. Delfin Lee is now facing a controversy that may sentenced him life imprisonment together with his co-workers. As noted by ABS CBN news team, his story, is on the rise and fall of a businessman once dubbed by his friends as the â€Å"Donald Trump of the Philippines† and who has looked up to SM mall magnate Henry Sy and who once aspired to make Globe Asiatique the â€Å"SM of Philippine housing. ANALYSIS OF THE CASE Knowing that Globe Asiatique is a well-known company when it comes to housing industry, it is still apparent that GA fraudulently mismanaged the operations of the company. They used â€Å"ghost borrowers† just to obtain a huge funds for their projects located in the provinces, particularly in Mabalacat Pampanga. It was evidently proved by the auditors of P ag-IBIG namely Gloria Bautista and Nelin Paraiso who testified that they were able to detect the fraud through the internal audit systems of the said agency. There were also some statements coming from employees of Globe Asiatique, they were used as â€Å"special buyers†, the term used by the firm to refer to a fake borrower, to obtain loans from the Home Development Mutual Fund or Pag-IBIG Fund and from private banks. It was expressly stated by Venissa Panem and Francisco Dela Cruz. In addition, according to Dela Cruz, he and his superior were able to produce more than a hundred of special buyers through that scheme. In that scheme, employees name will be used by the said company, and with that, the company will be able to obtain a loan from Pag-IBIG since those special buyers were considered as prospective buyers of the said housing projects. It also became easier for GA to obtain a loan from Pag-IBIG, since GA is using the window 1 program of the Pag-IBIG, where it is the developer that receives, processes, and approves the housing loan of individual Pag-IBIG members after 2 years of continuing such transactions GA were able to obtain 9,951 accounts and were able to obtain 6. 5 billion worth of loan, which is 5 times than any other house developers. As stated by Mr. Delfin Lee,the CEO and also the founder of Globe Asiatique, his son Dexter Lee is the executive and finance vice president while his daughter Divine is the vice president for international sales and marketing, in that case it would be easier for the company to hide employee connivance. In that way, they’ll be able to hide fraud without supervision from an independent objective individual inside the company due to close family relations which increases familiarity threat. Another problem I can say is the social responsibility being promulgated inside the company, though they provide rewards for TV shows, they are still stealing cash from other people through Pag-IBIG. GA also lacks internal control inside its vicinity, almost all the employees were part of the anomalies circulating inside, especially in terms of obtaining loan from Pag-IBIG. There were also problems in Pag-IBIG for making transactions very fast, the controls for both Pag-IBIG and GA were both ineffective, that even a dead person or fictitious person will be able to obtain loan in the said house developers and from the said agency, since GA is using Window 1. But according to the owner of the said house developer, there was a policy measures included in the window 1, such measures included buy-back options wherein the developer has the option to buy back the property after two years, and substitution or allowing new qualified members to borrow and purchase the properties secured under questionable circumstances to recover the loans. Because of ineffective controls, both the agency and the company faced a huge problem involving a huge amount of money worth 6. 5 billion. It is also apparent that the marketing strategy of Globe Asiatique is fast changing and fast developing which is the reason why they badly need huge amount of resources that even if there’s so many investors it wouldn’t still be possible for them to gain enough funds to complete the project within the designated time. There were a lot of improvements every year that the company’s resources and ability to meet its daily operations is being compromised. Another problem is the anomalies circulating the agency and the house developers, it happened for two consecutive years where both officials of both entity’s involved were used to process all those transactions in an unblemished manner. There were collusions circulating between those two entities. RECOMMENDATIONS Connivance of employees is really apparent in the case of Globe Asiatique and Pag-IBIG. They were able to conceal the anomalies circulating between them for two consecutive years. And for that they were able to set a record of corruption that can possibly exist between a private corporation and a government agency. To avoid the same thing again in the future, internal control should be the focus of every entity, to avoid fraud mismanagement inside an entity just like what happened to GA. An independent and competent auditor should be employed every year and if it’s not possible in sometime on a surprise basis to see if the internal control of the company is working effectively. And those internal control should be implemented by independent individuals inside the company to secure all the transactions coming in and out of the company. Another thing is to avoid too much reliance on family relations, it increases familiarity threat; there should be an independent person between any family relations inside a company to avoid conflict of interest. There should also be segregation of duties between them; there should be an intermediary between them, where one should not report directly to his or her relatives inside a company. Since employee collusions are also prevalent in the case of GA, any entity should employ a competent individual that could stand for his principle, and each employee should be directly supervised by their superiors. In the case of GA if one person would stand and would report what’s happening inside the GA, GA will not suffer as much as today. Since Globe Asiatique is known for its best amenities at low priced through its well-known marketing strategy, it shouldn’t let itself be compromised by offering more than what they can actually afford. Since they were compromised they were forced to look for more funds that their investors cannot give. They want more funds to generate more projects that they cannot meet on time, because they want to gain competitive advantage. They should first focus on what they can do to strengthen customer’s loyalty and not on too much expansion that they cannot handle effectively. Since in the controversy faced by GA, employees were directly involved, any entity should stress and implement a strong internal control, strong corporate social responsibility, strong corporate ethics and most vital the employee trainings for self-improvement, to avoid and prevent fraud in any entity, because it only takes few persons to stand for the right things to do and it will make a difference, a huge difference. And last while formulating their housing developments, they should hire experts so that they will know if they’ll be able to meet the huge amount of money needed to finance the said projects without being compromised in terms of generating enough funds. Through that GA executives will not be drawn to go beyond what law expressly prohibited.
